Interesting facts about the size, speed and agility of this non-domestic animal.

  • Buffalo are not domestic animals and should be treated with caution and respect.
  • A mature bison male will weigh around 2000 lbs., while a mature female will weigh around 1100 lbs.
  • It is truly an amazing sight to watch animals of this size run at speeds up to 35 miles per hour.
  • Everyone's opinion of the "perfect" buffalo is slightly different, however some things to look for include a straight back, good height and length, and straight legs.
  • Each animal has its own distinct personality.
  • Buffalo are herd animals and have a distinct "pecking" order from top to bottom.
  • Buffalo are not easily frightened and are very curious about what's happening around them.
  • Watching a buffalo's tail will let a person know if the animal is angry. If its tail is up and its head is down, it's mad.
  • Buffalo have excellent vision and hearing. Their memory is also excellent -- they don't forget!
